Records Tumble at Saratoga Fall Mixed Sale

The Saratoga Fall Sale set several new highwater marks Monday, closing its seventh renewal with across-the-board gains as well as double-digit point increases in average and median.

The sale topper, Hip 180, was a first-crop weanling colt by Laoban, a Grade 2 winning son of Uncle Mo, out of Promising Vow. The bay colt was purchased for $140,000 by Bluewater Sales, agent from the consignment of Sequel New York. Close behind was Hip 78, a colt from the first crop of Outwork, a Grade 1 winner by Uncle Mo, who sold for $125,000 to Machmer Hall from the consignment of Catalyst Bloodstock, agent.

The top broodmare of the day was graded stakes producer Mama Maxine (Hip 33), an unraced More Than Ready mare sold in foal to Exaggerator for $105,000. That mare was purchased by Southern Equine Stable from the consignment of Pope McLean’s Crestwood Farm as agent. Mama Maxine’s first foal is 2016 Canadian Derby (G3) winner Ready Intaglio.

In total, 115 horses changed hands during the single session for $3,381,200, a 4% increase over last year’s gross. The average for all types increased 30% to $29,402 from $22,674 last year, while the median rose 67% to $20,000 over last year’s mark of $12,000. The gross, average, and median were sale records. The RNA rate fell 7%.

The gains were spread across all types of offerings, with significant increases in average and median for broodmares, racing and/or broodmare prospects, and weanlings. The average price for broodmares rose 43%, while the median increased 62%. Average and median for racing and/or broodmare prospects rose 58% and 73%, respectively. Weanlings saw a nearly 5% bump in average price and a 13% increase in median. The average and median for both broodmares and weanlings were sale records.
